Sugarshine began in the late spring of 2016. It had become an annual tradition to have a big Jamaican style yardie cookout. Chris and his wife, who are frequent visitors to the island, cook jerk chicken, rice and peas, festival and other jamaican favorites. We hang out in “di yard” drinking Appleton rum and listening to reggae music with our good friends.
In 2016, we decided we wanted to step it up a notch. We decided to get all the musicians that attend together to form a band so we could have some live reggae at Jerk Fest 2016. A few weeks before the event, we got together to see what songs we could put together, thinking we would just do some covers to keep the crowd entertained. However, something else happened. Original music started coming out. Every time we would get together, 2 or 3 new songs would emerge until by the time Jerk Fest came around, we had 2 sets of original music!
The stage was set and the instruments and sound gear were brought out. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had different plans and sent in a huge rain storm. Unnerved by the change of plans, we moved the party indoors and set up in the living room. We played our hearts out that night and we knew we had something special.
After the festivities were over and everyone had gone home, the feeling remained that the music we had created should not end after one evening. We got together afterwards and decided to continue writing and to form a lasting band.
After writing over 15 original songs, we decided in November of 2016 to take the best 8 and record them in the studio. The album “Better Days” is now finished and can be purchased at shows or all major streaming sites!
In this year of being a band, we have experienced great heights of joy together to the lowest depths of worry and despair. All while growing closer as a band and as a family. As we set forth on this journey and more and more live performance dates get added to the books, we are excited to see where this ride takes us. We’re Sugarshine…..and we’re coming!
